A Solo Exhibition by Lindsay Carlton

"Characters is a series of photographs in which I use both staged photography and self-portraiture to create bizarre scenes with different characters. Within these scenes I create a staged image that introduces both a character and a narrative to the viewer without providing any concluding details. I use costume design, lighting, special effects, and props in these images to enhance this idea of a storyline. Inspired by media and the horror/thriller genres of films, this series also has suggestions of dark situations and theatrical elements. The pieces in this series are large scale inkjet prints on luster paper."

Lindsay Carlton (she/her) is a first year graduate student in the MFA Studio Art program concentrating in Creative Photography at the University of Florida. While Carlton is a Central Florida native, she earned her BA in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in Wilmington, North Carolina in 2021. Inspired by artists like Cindy Sherman and Laurie Simmons, Carlton works primarily in staged photography and self-portraiture, where she often creates narratives within the composition of her images. Carlton manipulates different elements both preproduction and postproduction, to create unique characters, often placing them in situations that evoke bizarre feelings and suggest dark situations.
